With proper university operations only commencing in April 2024 at the ITI Mungpoo premises, the needs of the university and its students are manifold, and the initiatives that ought to be initiated are multitudinous and multifaceted. Project ‘Nirmaan’ is the amalgamation of these initiatives that we plan on undertaking and accomplishing in the next eighteen months. The guiding intentionality of the project is to provide for the immediate academic and material needs of the students with deliberate haste, while laying the foundations for other long-term academic ventures and pursuits that a public university should represent. In this section, we will provide brief descriptions of some of the initiatives we intend on pursuing under this project.

विश्वविद्यालयको सञ्चालन प्रक्रिया अप्रेल २०२४ देखि उचित प्रकारले आई.टी.आई भवन, मङपुमा शुरू भएको छ, अनि विश्वविद्यालय र विद्यार्थीवर्गका आवश्यकताहरू अनेकौं छन्, साथै जुन पहलहरूको आरम्भ गर्नुपर्नेछ त्यो पनि अनेक र विविधतापूर्ण छन्। परियोजना ‘निर्माण’ यसै पहलहरूको एउटा मिश्रण हो, जसलाई हामीले आउँदो अठाह्र महीनाभित्र शुरू गरेर पूर्ण गर्ने पनि योजना बनाइरहेका छौं। यो परियोजनाको मार्गदर्शन अनुसार विद्यार्थीवर्गको तात्कालिक शैक्षणिक अनि भौतिक आवश्यकताहरूलाई चाँड़ोभन्दा चाँड़ो पूर्ण गर्नका साथै एउटा सार्वजनिक विश्वविद्यालयको रूपमा प्रतिनिधित्व गर्ने प्रकारको अन्य दीर्घकालिक शैक्षणिक उपक्रमहरूको आधारशिला राख्नु पनि हो। यी निम्न विभाजित खण्डहरूमा, ती पहलहरूको संक्षिप्त विवरण प्रदान गरिरहेछौं जसलाई हामीले यस परियोजना अनुसार अघि बढ़ाउने योजना बनाइरहेका छौं।

Media Lab

The university offers a post-graduate programme in Mass Communication, and under the guidance of our present programme co-coordinator Dr. Subhojyoti Kundu, we have achieved relatively successful results when taking into account the pandemic. A student of the programme, Mayuri Poddar, was recently felicitated in April 2024 by the Public Relations Society of India, and it was all due to the efforts of the educators involved. We expect a healthy enrollment during this admission cycle, and have resolved to build a good training lab for these incoming students, and in accordance, have requested the Government to aid us. Descriptively titled ‘Media Lab’, we envision it as not only becoming the training ground for students of the Mass Communication programme, but also a center for researching all that can be considered media, be it the medium of hardware itself, or the ever-changing domain of new media. Concisely, we expect it to be the fulcrum in this Himalayan region of the aphorism that the ‘medium is the message’.

मीडिया ल्याब

विश्वविद्यालयको मास कम्युनिकेशन एउटा पोस्ट-ग्रेजुएट प्रोग्राम हो, र प्रोग्राम कोअर्डिनेटर डा॰ शुभोज्योति कुण्डुको मार्गदर्शनमा हामीले महामारीको समयमा अपेक्षाकृत सफल परिणाम प्राप्त गरेका थियौं। यो प्रोग्रामको एकजना विद्यार्थी सुश्री मयुरी पोद्दार अप्रेल २०२४-मा ‘पब्लिक रिलेशन्स सोसाइटी अफ इण्डिया’ द्वारा सम्मानित भएकी छन् र यी सबै शिक्षकगणको परिश्रमको कारणले सम्भव हुनसकेको थियो। हामी यस प्रवेश चक्रको समय एउटा स्वस्थ नामांकनको आशा राख्दछौं, अनि यी भावी विद्यार्थीवर्गको निम्ति एउटा राम्रो प्रशिक्षण ल्याब बनाउने संकल्प लिएका छौं। यसैको निम्ति हामीले सरकारसित सहयोगको अपिल पनि गरेका छौं। वर्णनात्मक शीर्षक ‘मीडिया ल्याब’ भएकोलाई केवल मास कम्युनिकेशन प्रोग्राम विद्यार्थीको निम्ति मात्र प्रशिक्षणस्थलको रूपमा हेरिरहेका छैनौं, तर यसलाई मीडियाको कुनै पनि पक्षको अनुसन्धान केन्द्रको रूपमा कल्पना गरिरहेका छौं, त्यो हार्डवेयरको माध्यम होस् वा नयाँ मीडियाको निरन्तर बदलँदो क्षेत्र नै किन नहोस्। संक्षेपमा, हामीले यसलाई यो हिमालय क्षेत्रमा ‘माध्यम नै सन्देश हो’ भन्ने विचारको केन्द्र बनाउने आशा राखेका छौं।

Social Science and Humanities Lab

Graduate studies at the university currently include two language programmes—Nepali and English—along with the History and Political Science programmes. Beyond the teaching of mandated curriculum, we intend on providing the students with resources to implement and experiment with their fields of study. This initiative hinges on the idea that labs should not only be restricted to the natural sciences and practical/professional studies. While the university is currently not in a position to provide state of the art equipment, we intend on establishing a lab for these students with the minimum requirements for projects such as literature and language preservation, archiving, and data and survey analysis. Therefore, we plan on providing a few good computers, a quality scanner, recording equipment, and most importantly, a room. We certainly hope that this initiative will branch out in the future to different focuses such as a language lab, a data lab, and a digital humanities lab, however for now, we will endeavour to provide the minimum necessities.

सामाजिक विज्ञान अनि मानविकी ल्याब

वर्तमानमा विश्वविद्यालयमा स्नातक अध्ययनमा द्वय-भाषा प्रोग्राम नेपाली अनि अंग्रेजीसहित इतिहास र राजनीतिक विज्ञान प्रोग्राम सम्मिलित छ। अनिवार्य पाठ्यक्रम पठनको अतिरिक्त, हामीले विद्यार्थीवर्गको निम्ति अध्ययन क्षेत्रलाई विस्तार र प्रयोग गर्नको निम्ति संसाधन प्रदान गर्ने योजना बनाइरहेछौं। यो पहल यस विचारमा आधारित छ, जुन ल्याब केवल प्राकृतिक विज्ञान अनि व्यावसायिक/प्रोफेसनल अध्ययनसम्म सीमित हुनुहुँदैन। यद्यपि विश्वविद्यालय वर्तमानमा अत्याधुनिक उपकरण प्रदान गर्ने स्थितिमा छैन, हामीले साहित्य अनि भाषा संरक्षण, आर्काइविंग, अनि डेटा र सर्वेक्षण विश्लेषण जस्तो परियोजनाको निम्ति न्यूनतम आवश्यकताहरूले भरिएको एउटा ल्याब स्थापित गर्ने योजना बनाइरहेछौं। यसैले, हामीले केही राम्रो कम्प्युटर, एउटा गुणवत्तापूर्ण स्क्यानर, रेकर्डिङ्ग उपकरण, अनि सबैभन्दा महत्वपूर्ण एउटा कोठा प्रदान गर्ने योजना बनाइरहेछौं। हामीलाई विश्वास छ यो पहल भविष्यमा भाषा ल्याब, डेटा ल्याब अनि डिजिटल मानविकी ल्याब जस्तो विभिन्न केन्द्रबिन्दु अनुसार शाखा बनाइने छ, तर अहिलेलाई हामीले न्यूनतम आवश्यकताहरूलाई पूर्ण गर्ने प्रयास गरिरहेका छौं।

Chimeki Siksha Sahayata Initiative

Upon deliberating on how the university should allocate its resources meant for Institutional Social Responsibility, we realized that a public university should do what it does best – help educate. The university campus is located in a semi-urban place called Mungpoo, known for its medicinal cinchona plantations and the bungalow of Rabindranath Tagore with a literary and historical legacy. Our planned Chimeki Siksha Sahayata Initiative aims to help the secondary and higher secondary students from the neighbouring villages with their studies by hosting day-long tutorial sessions every week, with our university students as the educators. In a remote place such as this, it will not only provide an avenue for practical training to our students but will also be of benefit to the society, a goal which the preamble of the university’s founding legislation dictates.

छिमेकी शिक्षा सहायता पहल

जब हामीले विश्वविद्यालयलाई आफ्नो संस्थागत सामाजिक उत्तरदायित्व अन्तर्गत संसाधनहरूको आवंटन कसरी गर्न पनि हो भन्ने विचार गरयौ, त्यतिबेला हामीलाई अनुभव भयो कि सार्वजनिक विश्वविद्यालयले त्यही गर्न पर्दछ जुन उसले सबैभन्दा राम्रोसँग गर्न सक्दछ – शिक्षामा सहयोग गर्नु। विश्वविद्यालय परिसर एउटा अर्धनगरी स्थान मंगपुमा स्थित छ, जुन ठाउँ रवीन्द्रनाथ ठाकुरको साहित्यिक र ऐतिहासिक महत्व रहेको बासस्थान र औषधीय गणले युक्त सिन्कोना बगानको निम्ति परिचित छ। हाम्रो योजना अनुसार छिमेकी शिक्षा सहायता पहलको उद्देश्य, छिमेकी गाउँहरूको माध्यमिक अनि उच्चतर माध्यमिक विद्यार्थीवर्गलाई पढ़ाईमा सहयोग गर्नु, हाम्रो विश्वविद्यालयका विद्यार्थीहरूलाई शिक्षकको रूपमा प्रस्तुत गरेर सप्ताहमा एकपल्ट सम्पूर्ण दिन ट्यूटोरियल सत्र आयोजित गर्नु। एउटा दुर्गम ठाउँमा, यसले केवल हाम्रो विद्यार्थीवर्गलाई व्यावहारिक प्रशिक्षणको अवसर मात्र प्रदान गर्दैन तर समाजलाई पनि लाभ पुरयाउनेछ, जुन विश्वविद्यालय स्थापना विधेयक प्रस्तावनाको एउटा लक्ष्य पनि हो।

Vaachanmala Lecture and Seminar Series

Vaachanmala refers to public sphere dialogues, and we intend on hosting monthly special lectures and quarterly seminars under this banner. Although the invited abstracts and topics will be limited to matters pertaining to this Himalayan region, we will extend invitations to serious scholars from all parts of the globe who express interest in deliberating within this limitation. Optimistically, we hope that these academic dialogues can be published by the university in the form of books, and we have preemptively initiated the process of registering for ISBN and ISSN identifiers.

वाचनमाला व्याख्यान अनि सेमिनार श्रृंखला

वाचनमाला’-को अर्थ सार्वजनिक संवाद हो, अनि हामीले यस ब्यानर अनुसार मासिक विशेष व्याख्यान अनि ‘त्रैमासिक’ सेमिनार आयोजित गर्ने योजना बनाइरहेछौं। यसको निम्ति आमन्त्रित विषयवस्तु सार र विषय शीर्षक यसै हिमालय क्षेत्रसित सम्बन्धित विषयहरूसम्म सीमित रहनेछ। यस व्याख्यानमाला ती प्रबुद्ध विद्वानवर्गलाई आमन्त्रण गरिनेछ जसले यस विषय बारे विचार-विमर्शमा रूचि राख्दछन्। हामी आशावादी छौं यी शैक्षणिक संवादहरू विश्वविद्यालयद्वारा पुस्तकहरूको रूपमा प्रकाशित गर्न सक्षम बन्नेछौं। यसको निम्ति हामीले आई.एस.बी.एन. अनि आई.एस.एस.एन. परिचयको निम्ति पञ्जीकरणको प्रक्रिया पहिलेबाट नै शुरू गरिसकेका छौं।

Pahar Ra Khola Sanvaad: A Bulletin of Himalayan Studies

We do not plan to publish a single issue of this proposed journal in the next eighteen months, unless there is providence induced smooth sailing, which reasonably seems unlikely. The proposed journal we intend to establish is for the long-term accomplishments of the institution. It will naturally be headquartered at Darjeeling Hills University, but to achieve the desired riguor, repute and indexation, we want to convince upcoming and senior scholars from all over the globe who are interested in research outcomes from this region to be a part of the editorial team. Therefore, under the period of Project ‘Nirmaan’, we want to focus on establishing an outstanding editorial board and doing the groundwork for the first issue, rather than hastily publishing the journal itself. Similar to the Vaachanmala series, the focus will be limited to deliberations on the region, but the invitations for abstracts will be extended to all serious researchers who desire to contribute within this scope. Furthermore, one of our unflinching objectives is that the journal should be multilingual, which is another reason for the estimated delay.

पहाड़ अनि खोला संवादः एउटा हिमाली अध्ययन बुलेटिन

आगामी अठाह्र महीनाभित्र यस प्रस्तावित पत्रिकाको कुनै पनि अंक प्रकाशित गर्ने योजना अहिलेलाई बनाएका छैनौं र जबसम्म कुनै प्रकारको सहज परिस्थितिहरू उत्पन्न हुनेछैन, जुन यथार्थमा सम्भव छैन। जुन प्रस्तावित पत्रिका स्थापित गर्ने योजना बनाइरहेछौं, त्यो संस्थानको दीर्घकालिक उपलब्धिहरूका निम्ति हुनेछ। यो स्वाभाविक रूपले यसको मुख्यालय दार्जीलिङ पार्वत्य विश्वविद्यालय हुनेछ, तर अपेक्षित दृढ़ संकल्पित, प्रतिष्ठापूर्ण अनि अनुक्रमणिका प्राप्त गर्नको निम्ति हामी चाहन्छौं कि यस क्षेत्रमा शोध कार्य र यसको परिणाममा रूचि राख्ने आगामी वरिष्ठ विद्वानहरूलाई सम्पादकीय मण्डलीमा समावेश गरिनेछ। यसैले परियोजना ‘निर्माण’-को यस अवधिमा हामीले एउटा उत्कृष्ट सम्पादकीय मण्डलीको गठनमा ध्यान केन्द्रित गर्न चाहन्छौं, पहिलो अंकको तयारी हतारोमा होइन, त्यसैले तुरन्तै पत्रिका प्रकाशित गर्ने हतार गरिने छैन। वाचनमाला श्रृंखला जस्तै हाम्रो ध्यान यसमा पनि स्थानीयतालाई नै प्रमुखता दिइनेछ, यसको निम्ति यस क्षेत्रमा योगदान दिन चाहनुहुने समर्पित र गम्भीर शोधकर्ताहरूबाट विषय-सार प्रदान गर्ने निमन्त्रणा दिइनेछ। यसको अतिरिक्त हामीले ‘पहाड़ अनि खोला’-लाई बहुभाषी बनाउने महत्वपूर्ण प्राथमिकता दिएको हुनाले अनुमानित ढिल्याई हुन गएको हो।

Chaitanya: The Darjeeling Hills University Herald

Pahar Ra Khola Sanvaad is intended for established scholars or research scholars in graduate studies, but we also want to provide the students of Darjeeling Hills University an avenue to publish within the same subject scope. Our planned objective to provide such a platform is Chaitanya. We intend to nudge students to take it beyond the monthly/bi-monthly threshold and encourage them to integrate it with new media forms and practices.

चैतन्य: दार्जीलिङ पार्वत्य विश्वविद्यालयको पत्रिका

पहाड़ र खोला संवाद स्थापित विद्वतजन र स्नातकीय अध्ययनरत शोधकर्ताहरूको निम्ति हो। यसरी नै हामीले दार्जीलिङ पार्वत्य विश्वविद्यालयको विद्यार्थीवर्गलाई पनि यसै विषयको सीमामा राखेर प्रकाशन साधनको एउटा अवसर प्रदान गर्न चाहन्छौं। हामीले प्रदान गर्ने यस मञ्चको उद्देश्य ‘चैतन्य’ हो। विद्यार्थीवर्गले यस मासिक/द्वयमासिकलाई सीमित सीमादेखि बाहिर लिएर जाउन र यसलाई नयाँ मीडियाको रूप अनि अभ्यास/प्रयोगको रूपमा सम्मिलित गराउन भनी प्रोत्साहन प्रदान गर्न चाहन्छौं।
