A new era in the history of Darjeeling Hills dawns with the establishment of Darjeeling Hills University in the Himalayan foothills of West Bengal. It will open up new vistas in the academic arena of the hilly terrain of Darjeeling Himalayas. Lying amidst the pine-studded slopes of the Eastern Himalayas, set against the snow-capped peaks and blanketed by the emerald-green tea and cinchona plantation, this seat of learning aims to cater for the long-awaited need of higher education and research activities in this region. The objective of the University will be to disseminate knowledge by offering courses in higher education and research facilities with special emphasis on the amelioration of the socio-economic status of the people of this region as well as the widening of their academic, intellectual and cultural horizon. The foundation stone of Darjeeling Hills University was laid in September 2018 at Jogighat, Mungpoo, where the construction is ongoing. It was included in the University Grants Commission’s List of Universities in September 2022. The only university in the Darjeeling hills is currently functioning from the new ITI premises at Bhasmey, Mungpoo.

पश्चिम बंगालको हिमाली भेकमा दार्जीलिङ पार्वत्य विश्वविद्यालयको स्थापनासँगै दार्जीलिङ पहाड़को इतिहासमा एउटा नयाँ युगको प्रारम्भ भएको छ। यसले दार्जीलिङे हिमाली भेकको धरातलमा शैक्षणिक क्षेत्रको एउटा नयाँ बाटो खोल्नेछ। पूर्वी हिमालको सल्लाघारीमाझ हिउँले ढाकिएका शिखरहरूको प्रतिस्पर्धा गर्दै अनि बहुमूल्य हरियो चिया र सिन्कोनाको रूखमाझ प्रकृतिको काखमा स्थित यस अध्ययन केन्द्रको उद्देश्यले उच्च शिक्षा र अनुसन्धान गतिविधिहरूको धेरै लामो समयदेखि प्रतिक्षारत आवश्यकतालाई पूर्ण गर्नुछ। विश्वविद्यालयको उद्देश्य यस क्षेत्रको मानिसहरूका सामाजिक, आर्थिक सुधार सँगसँगै उनीहरूका शैक्षिक, बौद्धिक र सांस्कृतिक क्षितिजको विस्तारमाथि विशेष जोड़ दिनुसँगै उच्च शिक्षा र अनुसन्धान सुविधाहरूमा पाठ्यक्रम प्रदान गरेर ज्ञानको प्रसार गर्नुछ। दार्जीलिङ हिल्स विश्वविद्यालयको आधारशिला सेप्टेम्बर, २०१८ मा जोगीघाट, मङपूमा राखिएको थियो, जुन निर्माणाधीन अवस्थामा छ। यसलाई सेप्टेम्बर २०२२ मा विश्वविद्यालय अनुदान आयोगले विश्वविद्यालयको सूचीमा गाभेको छ। दार्जीलिङ पहाड़को एकमात्र विश्वविद्यालय वर्तमानमा भस्मे, मङपूमा नयाँ आई.टी.आई. परिसरमा संचालन भइरहेको छ।

As soon as the newly established Darjeeling Hills University was granted permission to begin the admissions process and admit its first batch of students, new deadlier variants of the Coronavirus disease had befallen upon the world. With State coffers strained along with the new normal of lockdowns, there was not much progression on the construction of the university’s new campus, and the students who deserved to be at their university did not have any course for respite. Like many cases the world over, the students of the university, in this case the first batch admitted, completed their degrees without even seeing its gates and attending classes at a neighboring host university. The second batch admitted would have followed a similar sombre trajectory had the government not taken the decision to jump-start the process of return to a more nourishing normal this year. It is without doubt that there are and will be innumerable challenges in the near and distant futures, but these timeframes are miniscule when compared to the dream for one’s own university that had been decades in the making. There is finally one’s such university, and on April 9, 2024 at 10:00 am, the university’s first on-campus classes commenced with the clamoring of the gong.

दार्जीलिङ पार्वत्य विश्वविद्यालय स्थापित भएर विद्यार्थीवर्गले प्रवेश प्रक्रिया प्रारम्भ गर्ने अनुमति पाएकै समयमा संसारभरि नयाँ प्रकारको घातक कोरोना-भायरस फैलियो। कोरोनाको कारणले व्यापक लकडाउन पालन गर्नाले राज्य कोषमा पनि त्यसको प्रभाव पर्न गएकोले विश्वविद्यालयको निर्माणाधीन परिसर बनिनलाई भनेजस्तो प्रगति हुनसकेन, साथै जुन विद्यार्थीवर्ग विश्वविद्यालयमा अध्ययन गर्न चाहन्थे उनीहरूलाई यस संक्रामक रोगबाट रोकथाम गर्ने उपक्रम नगण्य थियो। संसारभरि घटित यस विश्वविद्यालयका पहिलो सत्रका विद्यार्थीवर्गले प्रवेश लिए, तर उनीहरूले अन्य विश्वविद्यालय सरह आफ्नो विश्वविद्यालयको प्रवेशद्वार पनि नदेखी डिग्री प्राप्त गरे। दोस्रो सत्रका विद्यार्थीवर्गले पनि यसै प्रकारको निराशाजनक नियतिलाई सामना गर्नु परयो, यदि यस वर्ष पनि सरकारले सामान्य स्थितिमा ल्याई पुरयाउन धेरै प्रकारले पोषण नगरेको भए, यसमा कुनै सन्देह छैन कि आउँदो दिनमा अझ बेसी चुनौतीहरूको सामना गर्नु पर्थ्यो। तर यी समय सीमाहरू कुनै अन्य विश्वविद्यालयको तुलनामा निकै कम्ति लाग्दछ, जसलाई बनाउन दशकौं समयहरू बितेका थिए। अन्तमा यो एउटा यस्तो विश्वविद्यालय हो, जसले अप्रेल ९, २०२४ को दिन समय १०:०० बजे बिहान, विश्वविद्यालयको अन-क्याम्पस कक्षाहरू घण्टीको ध्वनितरंगबाट शुरू गरयो।
