Darjeeling Hills University was statutorily established as Greenfield University by the Government of West Bengal in the year 2018 and was renamed as Darjeeling Hills University with another legislation passed in the year 2019. It started operations during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns and the initial classes were held online. With the relaxation of pandemic lockdowns, the mode of teaching slowly transitioned to on-campus classes at the University of North Bengal. In the early months of the year 2024, it was decided that the Darjeeling Hills University campus at Mungpoo would start operations, and subsequently, on April 9, on-campus classes finally commenced for the first time on Darjeeling Hills University’s own campus with the ringing of the gong.
